Department Lead: Kara Moss

Woodland department comprises of four classes of pupils who have Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD). We cater for pupils from the age of 3 to 19, and we’re based on the Downley site, where we regularly utilise the extensive facilities to support each pupil’s needs and development.

We like to work closely with parents/families, and also with professionals who are involved with the pupils i.e. the Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Social Workers, Specialist Teachers and medical professionals. Through working together, we have a shared understanding of each pupil’s needs. Positive relationships are of paramount importance, and we work with determination and commitment to build, maintain and develop a relationship with each and every individual pupil we work with. It is through these strong relationships and shared understanding that we learn about what motivates and engages each pupil. We then use this information to plan fun, individualised learning activities.

In Woodland department we focus on the individual learning opportunities within a range of experiences, lessons and routines. We recognise the importance of repetition, providing choices and promoting independence within everyday routines. A high proportion of the pupils’ time in Woodland department is spent on developing their Communication, Physical Skills and Personal, Social and Emotional Well-Being. We aim to recognise every achievement and every effort made to communicate, however small this may be.

Gemstone Department are also based on the Downley Site. Each Woodland Department Class had a ‘Buddy Class’ link with a Gemstone Department group of pupils.
